Q.1: Why Periodic Maintenance is important?

A.1: Periodic Maintenance helps to insure maximum performance, greater reliability, trouble
free driving and longer life for any vehicle.

Q.2: What is Periodic Maintenance?

A.2: Periodic Maintenance is an inspection service which is carried out at specified intervals of
time.

Q.3: When does Periodic Maintenance due?

A.3: Due to severe driving condition in country, Periodic Maintenance is due at every 5000 km
or every 3 months whichever comes first. Moreover in diesel vehicles, engine oil is
changed at every 2500 km.

Q.4: When the battery electrolyte is low, what should be used to refill the battery?

A.4: Battery electrolyte is dilute sulfuric acid (mixture of sulfuric acid and distilled water). Only
the water in the battery electrolyte is lost, by electrolysis and natural evaporation of water.
Therefore, distilled water should be used to replenish the battery electrolyte.

Q.5: Can tap water be used to refill the battery?

A.5: If any water containing impurities is continuously used to refill the battery, its impurities
accumulate and shorten battery life.

Q.6: Why does a battery discharge?

A.6: Due to following reasons battery discharges:
• Vehicle is run only at night. (Electrical load is large.)
• Vehicle is stopped for long period of time with the engine idling. (Amount of electricity
generated is small.)
• Engine is started many times a day. (Electrical load is large.)
• Traffic jams for long period of time. (Battery temperature is high)
• Shortage of battery electrolyte
Q.7: Why do brake pads wear frequently?

A.7: The life of brake pads greatly depends on how the brakes are used. However common
reasons of weariness of brake pads are:
• When brakes are used frequently then brake pads and linings wear out quickly.
• When the speed of the vehicle just before applying the brakes is higher, and the cargo and the number of passengers are greater, then brake pads and linings wear out faster.
• When the brakes are applied suddenly, brake pads and linings wear faster.
• Front brake pads wear faster than rear brake linings or pads.
• A/T vehicle brake pads or linings wear faster than for M/T vehicles brakes pads or linings.

 

 

Q.8: What causes tires wear out?A.8: The following are the causes of tires wear out:
• When the air pressure is low, treads movement becomes greater, and the tire wears out faster
• When the load has increased, the flexing of tires is increased, and treads movement becomes greater and tires wear faster.
• If vehicle speed becomes higher then driving force, braking force and centrifugal force increase. This causes slippage between tires and the road surface and the tires wear out faster.
• The force opposing centrifugal force at the time of cornering generates friction power between tires and the road surface which causes tires wear out.

Q.9: Why is tire rotation necessary periodically?

A.9: When a vehicle is being loaded, being driven, and is turning, the forces applied on the
front tires and rear ties are different, so the wear of front tires and rear ties each advances
in a unique way. Therefore, for tire durability, it is important to do the tire rotation at
appropriate times.

Q.10: If Engine Oil is not changed periodically then what happens?

A.10: Then engine performance lowers due to poor lubrication. (the oil film thickness reduces
as it absorbs heat produced by metal to metal contacts.)
Result: Engine may require overhauling.

Q.11: If Engine Oil Filter is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.11: Then oil that is contaminated with metal particles may discharge in Engine. (the oil flow
through filter is affected.)
Result: Engine may require overhauling.
Q.12: If Engine Coolant is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.12: Then engine overheats due to radiator and hose pipes become clogged with rust (the
circulation of cold water is affected.)
Result: Engine may require overhauling.

Q.13: If Engine Coolant is leaking then what happens?
A.13: Then engine overheats due to poor cooling. (no sufficient coolant exists for cooling.)
Result: Engine may require overhauling.

Q.14: If Gear Oil is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.14: Then noise is generated due to poor lubrication. (the oil film thickness reduces as it
absorbs heat produced by metal to metal contacts and wears gear teeth.).
Result: Gear may be seized and vehicle will become inoperative.

Q.15: If Automatic Transmission Fluid is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.15: Then hydraulic oil pressure is not maintained due to burnt rubber parts. (automatic
transmission operates with hydraulic pressure only.)
Result: There may be no gear shifting and vehicle may become inoperative.

Q.16: If Air Filter is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.16: Then engine power output and fuel economy are reduced due to air flow resistant.
(accurate air fuel mixture ratio is disturbed.)
Result: It results in poor pickup, high fuel consumption, and black smoke.

Q.17: If Fuel Filter is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.17: Then supply of fuel decreases due to fuel filter clogged. (the flow of fuel through filter is
not proper.)
Result: Engine may run un- smoothly and high fuel consumption.

Q.18: If Spark Plugs are not changed periodically then what happens?
A.18: Then engine remains unstable due to poor ignition. (the air fuel mixture is not burnt
timely and accurately.)
Result: Engine may run un- smoothly and high fuel consumption.

Q.19: If worn Battery is not changed then what happens?
A.19: Then voltage drops due to non-recharging. (low amount of electricity is available to use
all lights and A/C.)
Result: Engine may not be started.


Q.20: If Fan Belt is not changed periodically then what happens?

A.20: Then belt tears due to deterioration
Result: Vehicle may stall.

Q.21: If radiator Cap is broken then what happens?
A.21: Then engine overheats due to coolant does not flow smoothly
Result: Engine may require overhauling.

Q.22: If Brake Fluid is not changed periodically then what happens?
A.22: Then brake fluid leaks due to rusted brake parts (brake oil leaks through worn out rubber
parts.)
Result: Brakes may fail causing an accident.

Q.23: If Brake Pads are not changed periodically then what happens?
A.23: Then brake does not activate due to worn brake pads
Result: Brakes may fail causing an accident.

Q.24: If Tire Pressure is not adjusted properly then what happens?
A.24: Then it causes uneven and abnormal wear of the tires due to inaccurate pressure
Result: Tire’s service life may reduce.

Q.25: If worn Tires are not replaced then what happens?
A.25: Then tires are likely to burst
Result: It may lead to an accident.

Q.26: If light bulbs are not maintained properly then what happens?
A.26: Then it is unable to drive at night, turn safely, and stop suddenly due to fused bulbs. (no
light to see.)
Result: It may lead to a rear end collision.

Q.27: If Windshield Wipers are not replaced then what happens?
A.27: Then visibility is affected due to un-cleaned windscreen. (worn out wipers leaves traces
on screen.)
Result: It may lead to unsafe driving. .
Q.28: If Windshield Washers Liquid is not top up regularly then what happens?
A.28: Then movement of wiper rubbers on dry windscreen leaves marks on it
Result: It may result in unclear visibility and unsafe driving. .

Q.29: If Car body is not polished regularly then what happens?
A.29: Then car paint peels off due to penetration of continuous sunlight and other chemicals
Result: Car body exterior appearance may not be good.

Q.30: Can we maintain our car through non authorized dealer?
A.30: It is recommended by Toyota to maintain your car at Toyota authorized dealership, asthey have qualified and Toyota trained technicians who take care of your car by using hi-tech equipment and specification standards.
